The lime kilns in La Chapelle-Montreuil
Les tanneries étaient une industrie importante dans la commune, mais l’agriculture l’était aussi. La production de chaux était une activité nécessaire à l’agriculture dans la région jusqu’au début du XXe siècle. La chaux était ensuite répandue afin de rendre plus fertiles les sols argileux de la région.
The tanneries and agriculture were a significant part of the industry in the municipality. The production of lime was necessary for agriculture in the region until the beginning of the 20th century. Lime was spread to fertilize the clayey soil of the region.
Pour la produire, on chargeait les fours à chaux de plusieurs couches alternées de calcaire et de bois. On mettait le feu à cet empilement et il ne restait plus qu’à récupérer la chaux à la base du four une fois la calcination terminée. Il y avait en général 2 cuissons par an et chacune durait environ 3 mois (il fallait donc maintenir le feu pendant de nombreuses semaines).
We had to fill the lime kilns in layers alternating between limestone and wood to produce lime. We had to put fire into this stacking, and then get the lime back from the base of the oven once the calcination was done. Usually, there were 2 cooking sessions per year and each one lasted around 3 months (it required to keep the fire ongoing during numerous weeks).
Ces grands édifices pouvaient atteindre des hauteurs impressionnantes. Ce four particulièrement bien conservé peut atteindre 13 à 15 mètres de hauteur, ce qui permettait donc un meilleur fonctionnement en continu du feu.
These big edifices could reach impressive heights. This kiln which is particularly well conserved is 13 to 15 meters tall, this height helped the fire to stay continuous.
Ce four à chaux, construit près d’une carrière à La Chapelle-Montreuil, a été très bien rénové récemment. Pour supporter le poids du mur, son entrée est en forme de voûte.
