Borne de gabelle

Cette borne de gabelle est une Borne du XVIIème siècle relative au droit des gabelles est conservée à la mairie déléguée de Montreuil-Bonnin depuis l’automne 2002.

Cette borne a été érigée en exécution d’un jugement arrêt contradictoire de la cour des aides de Paris, rendu le 20 septembre 1669 (ou 1660 ?).

This bollard was built after the execution of a judgment contradictory decision of the Paris Aid Court, pronounced on September 20^th 1669 (or 1660?).

Celui-ci conserve aux Montreuilllais (habitants de Montreuil) paroisse Saint-André, terre des Neurres ou Roche aux Fées (actuellement Les Bruères) et métairies en dépendant, leur privilège de ne pas payer l’impôt sur le sel – la
gabelle.

It gave the Montreuillais (inhabitants of Montreuil) the privilege to not pay tax on salt, called “gabelle” in French. This includes the parish Saint-André, land of Neurres or Rock of Fairies (today Les Bruères) and the tenant farms that depend on it.

Le Poitou s’en est affranchi au 16ème siècle (pays rédimé). À la différence de la province limitrophe au nord, l’Anjou (pays de grande gabelle), où l’impôt est le plus lourd, leur territoire paroissial n’étant pas inclus dans une zone tampon de cinq lieues sud-nord (env. 20 km), quadrillée de poste de surveillance et constamment patrouillée par les douaniers du sel – les gabelous -, pour traquer fraude et contrebande entre Anjou et Poitou.

The region of Poitou made it stop in the 16^th century (country redeemed) contrary to the north bordering province, Anjou (country of big salt tax), where tax was the most expensive, as the parochial land was not included in the buffer zone of five leagues south-north (around 20km), with monitoring stations and constantly patrolled by customs officers for salt, also called gabelous, to track any frauds and smuggling between Anjou and Poitou.
